The chef and co-owner of a popular Los Angeles restaurant has asked for a restraining order against her husband and business partner in a divorce filing in which she also accuses him of killing the couple’s cats, the L.A. Times reports.  Elizabeth Johnson and Will Aghajanian opened Horses in late 2021. The nearly 90-year-old building on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood, which formerly housed Ye Coach & Horses before becoming the Pikey, was an instant hit, with a Jan. 2022 Times review referring to the restaurant as “the city’s most exhilarating new dining experience in the last year.”  In Nov. 2022, Johnson requested a restraining order, alleging domestic violence by Aghajanian and saying that she feared for her safety and that of others. She also claimed that she and her husband “had cats that mysteriously ended up dying,” the Times reports. In her divorce filing, Johnson said in one instance, Aghajanian joked about feeding a kitten they had just gotten to coyotes a...

Engagement ring lost down toilet recovered by crews in Chino Hills more than year later

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:27:41 GMT

After more than a year since it was accidentally flushed down a residential toilet, public works crews in Chino Hills recovered an engagement ring and returned it to its owner, city officials announced Wednesday.  The engagement ring was first reported missing in March 2022, when a resident called the Chino Hills Public Works Department to report that a man had lost his fiancee’s ring down the toilet’s drain.  “Once he realized the ring was missing, he did what he could to try and retrieve it, even removing the toilet from the flange,” a news release from the city stated.  The man told public works crews that he then rented a sewer inspection camera to search the drainpipes for the piece of jewelry, and that while he was able to see it, he may have accidentally pushed the ring even further into the pipes.  Since the residence was located at the end of a cul-de-sac, city crews believed the ring could not have traveled that far even after several days of showers be...

South Carolina moves closer to abortion ban, a Southern trend that puts pressure on Virginia

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:27:41 GMT

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — South Carolina became the latest state to move toward a near total abortion ban Wednesday with legislation that if enacted would leave Virginia an outlier in the South as a place where women have unrestricted access to abortions amid a rapid rise in restrictions in the year since Roe v. Wade was overturned.South Carolina is among the last bastions in the region for those seeking legal abortions, but that status could end soon. Access would be almost entirely banned after about six weeks of pregnancy — often before women know they’re pregnant — under the bill that now must pass the state Senate, which previously rejected a proposal to nearly outlaw abortions but could give final passage to the new legislation next week. And most abortions after 12 weeks of pregnancy will be banned in North Carolina beginning July 1 after the state’s Republican-controlled Legislature successfully overrode the Democratic governor’s veto late Tuesday.Abortion is banned or severely re...

In the 2024 Md. Senate race, the Democrat with the most votes last year isn’t favored to win?

Conventional wisdom hasn’t yet been set in stone, but it is hardening when it comes to the race for the U.S. Senate seat that Maryland’s Ben Cardin is stepping down from next year. Those watching the Democratic primary see U.S. Rep. David Trone has the most money to spend. Since announcing last week, Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks has come out of the gate strong, racking up endorsements around the state, including from well-known leaders in other counties. In the weeks to come, U.S. Rep. Jamie Raskin, who gained major name recognition for House impeachment hearings during the Trump Administration, is also set to decide if he’ll run as well. He also might remain in the House of Representatives where he’s already gained a leadership role.Though he’s not favored to win, Montgomery County at-large councilman Will Jawando got more votes, by sheer numbers, than Alsobrooks, Trone and Raskin in their respective November 2022 elections.“I actually represen...
