A beloved 65-year-old man from Reseda is on life support after being struck by a car while he was riding his bike late last week, and now his family is having to come to terms with a terrible choice.  George Pareta had been riding his bike to Trader Joe’s, where he worked, on the morning of June 8 when a driver made a sudden turn in front of him, catapulting into the air and sending him crashing onto the pavement where he struck his head.  Paramedics responded to the scene, and though the 65-year-old's heart had stopped beating for some 25 minutes, they were able to resuscitate him and rush him to the hospital where he remains on life support.  The victim’s family, along with his son, Jorge Pareta, said he was the best father possible, and now, after the latest update from doctors, they are faced with an unimaginable choice.  “...between keeping him the way he is in an unresponsive state or taking him off life support,” Jorge said of the choice the family is now faced...

An authentic “Maya Union” wedding ceremony that was open to the public was held Sunday at the Hotel Maya in Long Beach. The service, conducted in the Mayan language, was packed with mysticism steeped in deep, meaningful ancient tradition.  “What we are trying to accomplish with this couple is that they end up bonding for the rest of their lives,” Marco Pacheco, the President and Founder of Casa De La Cultura Maya, told KTLA.  Pacheco noted that in preparation for the Maya Union, everything on the altar was symbolic of the elements fire, earth, water, air and the universe.  “This ancestral music...is Mayan ancestral music. Any time we hear the music, the music brings us to a soothing place right away in ourselves,” he added.  A Mayan elder from the Yucatan Peninsula performed the ceremony, complete with a purification ritual using Copal, a native plant burned by the Mayas as incense.  “Every year, we do things within an overarching campaign to honor all ...

SF Giants: The inside story of Brandon Crawford’s long-awaited debut on the mound

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 06:18:58 GMT

SAN FRANCISCO — One of the accolades Brandon Crawford valued most from his 13-year career was the fact that every one of his 1,600 games, all of his 13,178⅔ innings, had come at shortstop while wearing a Giants uniform. In Game No. 1,601, we learned there was something that meant even more to Crawford. After making his long-awaited debut on the mound in the ninth inning of Sunday’s 13-3 win over the Cubs, Crawford is no longer part of the exclusive club of players who spent their entire careers at shortstop, one that only Derek Jeter and Luis Aparacio could claim to with as many games as Crawford.Crawford belongs to a more exclusive club now.“I doubt many guys have played only shortstop for 1,600 games and pitched one game,” Crawford said, smiling. “So I’m on a list there by myself, I think.”That stat, though, is what first ran through Crawford’s head when manager Gabe Kapler approached him with the opportunity in the top of the eighth.Crawford wil...

SEATTLE (AP) — For more than two hours, Sue Bird was back commanding the middle of the court. At times funny, at times emotional, Bird’s 21-year career received a ceremony that matched the longevity of her basketball exploits when the Seattle Storm retired the No. 10 she wore during her WNBA career on Sunday. The event pushed nearly three hours in total length with Bird’s speech taking up more than half that amount. But it was the comprehensive closure that never materialized after Bird’s career ended in the 2022 WNBA playoffs.“I didn’t anticipate it being that long, but the truth is I don’t know that I could have taken anything out,” Bird said afterward. “That’s what this has meant to me. It was just so important for me to say names and to point people out and to tell them what they’ve meant.”From Bird’s fiancée Megan Rapinoe and hip-hop star Macklemore serving as emcee’s, to former teammates Swin Cash and Lauren Jackson giving heartfelt speeches, the event was Seattle’s opportunity ...
