Kevin Johnson used to cut hay in the field where the Severance baseball diamond now stands. After the Silver Knights’ 1-0 win over Golden on Saturday, the Severance head coach and lifelong resident will hang the school’s first state championship banner at that field — just four years after the opening of the school.Severance senior right-hander Mason Bright pitched a complete game shutout, and the Silver Knights manufactured the one run they needed to beat a talented and deep Golden team vying for its first crown in 20 years at the Rawlings Sports Complex at CSU-Pueblo.“The trophy is going to look good up in that empty trophy case, that’s for sure,” Bright said. “We’ve been grinding, and we’ve put in a lot of time together to get to this goal. We had the desire to get here, and the ability, and the motivation. It all paid off.”Senior right-hander Braeden McCarroll did everything he could to keep the Demons in the game, but Golden&...

Before Phuc and Nguyen Pham were killed in front of their home during a violent South Bay crime spree, the couple could often be found sitting on their porch or tending their garden, stopping to talk with anyone who walked by.The Phams, who were in their 70s, died suddenly Thursday when the man suspected of the three-hour rampage ran over them in a stolen car in their driveway in San Jose. The suspect in the violent spree, Kevin Parkourana, 31 of San Jose, was arrested Thursday on suspicion of high-jacking vehicles, ramming the cars into pedestrians and stabbing multiple people — leaving three dead — including the Phams — and five others injured.Though authorities have not officially identified the victims, the Phams were identified to this news organization by a relative as well as a close friend.“At our age, we see people pass, but not like this,” said Phu Phan, a close friend of the family, tearing up while looking at the Pham’s home. “There are so m...

Athletics’ Medina comes undone early, Miami wins 12-1

It’s hard to know what is more depressing — that the Athletics are 12-48 or that there are still 102 games left to play in the death spiral that is the 2023 season. The Athletics fell 12-1 to the Miami Marlins Saturday for their 13th consecutive road loss. Starting pitcher Luis Medina couldn’t make it out of the third inning, the A’s struck out 11 more times after whiffing 15 times on Friday, and they only averted a second straight shutout when Shea Langeliers had an RBI single with the bases loaded in the eighth inning. It was the seventh time this season the A’s have lost a game by 10 or more runs, accounting for 84 runs of the their bloated run differential of minus-210 that is far and away the worst in the major leagues.Miami, 31-28, got five shutout innings from Eury Perez, a 20-year-old 6-foot-8 Dominican right-hander who broke 100 miles per hour. He had five strikeouts. Steven Okert struck out the side in the sixth, and George Soriano threw the las...

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Connor Joe learned the importance of beating the St. Louis Cardinals when the Pittsburgh Pirates drafted the now well-traveled outfielder nearly a decade ago.The Cardinals have long been a measuring stick for the Pirates, one they’ve largely failed to meet for most of the last quarter century or more. It’s June. It’s still really, really early. Yet there are signs Pittsburgh has closed the gap on a team that’s been more tormentor than a rival for a long, long time.Joe’s two-run double highlighted a sixth-inning rally and the Pirates surged past St. Louis for a second time in less than 24 hours, edging the Cardinals 4-3 on Saturday for their fourth consecutive victory. The teams split a four-game set at Busch Stadium in mid-April. Nearly two months later, the Pirates have taken two at PNC Park with the kind of scrappy, grinding approach they believe has to be their identity if they want to challenge for the NL Central sooner rather than l...

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Commissioner Gary Bettman says the NHL is still committed to Arizona after Tempe voters rejected a referendum for a Coyotes arena.Bettman said the team is looking at other areas around Phoenix for a long-term home. “It’s a good market, and if we can make it work, we’ll make it work,” Bettman said. “We’ve had our challenges.”Bettman, who held his annual state of the league news conference Saturday before Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final between the Vegas Golden Knights and Florida Panthers, said he was surprised and disappointed but not shocked by the result of the vote last month. “Team-related referendums in all sports don’t do well,” Bettman said. “The Islanders did one (in 2011) and it lost. They got their building. When we were looking at Columbus for an expansion, that building referendum went down.”The future of the Coyotes is now a major question as they go into a second season playing at a 5,000-seat college rink on Arizona State’s campus.
