INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — There were 20 laps remaining in the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday and Arrow McLaren, the team that has emphatically upset the status quo in IndyCar, had managed to put Felix Rosenqvist and Pato O’Ward in position to fight for the win.Everything unraveled for the papaya-colored cars in spectacular fashion.Felix Rosenqvist was the first to fall, hitting the wall in Turn 1 before getting crushed from behind by Kyle Kirkwood, forcing the race to be red-flagged with 16 laps to go. On the restart, eventual winner Josef Newgarden shot to the lead, and O’Ward was side-by-side with Marcus Ericsson entering Turn 3 when they touched wheels and O’Ward hit the wall.Just like that, Arrow McLaren’s two best chances at the Borg-Warner Trophy were out of the race.Alexander Rossi wound up finishing fifth for the team, which was trying to win the Indy 500 for the first time since Johnny Rutherford carried its colors in 1976. Tony Kanaan came home 16th in what h...Josef Newgarden wins thrilling Indy 500

(CNN) â Josef Newgarden won the 107th running of the Indianapolis 500 in a wild finish Sunday after three crashes in the last 16 laps. The American driver passed last yearâs winner, Marcus Ericsson, in the final lap.A trio of red flag crashes set up a dramatic finish during the race. When the checkered flag finally waved, it was Newgarden who claimed his first Indy 500 win â but getting there required a lot of drama. In a terrifying scene with 16 laps to go, Felix Rosenqvist got loose and slid up into the wall. As Kyle Kirkwood tried to avoid the spinning Rosenqvist, he clipped the corner of Rosenqvistâs car.Kirkwoodâs car slammed into the wall, flipped and slid to a stop on its roof with sparks flying. The race was red-flagged, but neither driver was seriously injured. In a scary twist, Kirkwoodâs rear wheel broke free of its safety tether in the crash, cleared the catch fence an...Biden, McCarthy reach final deal to prevent default, now must sell to Congress

MADRID (AP) — Spain’s conservative opposition Popular Party made significant gains in Sunday’s local and regional elections, offering a dire assessment of public feeling towards the ruling left-wing coalition ahead of general elections in December. In the local vote, the Popular Party, or PP, won 31.5% of votes compared with 28.2% for the Spanish Socialist Workers Party, or PSOE, which leads the central government, with more than 97% of votes counted, according to results published by the Interior Ministry. This was a 1.2 percentage point decrease for PSOE on 2019, but almost a 9 point increase for the PP, which benefited from the collapse of the centrist Citizens party. The PP also dominated several regions previously won by PSOE including Valencia, Aragon and La Rioja. Spain’s regional governments have enormous power and budgetary discretion over education, health, housing and policing. The party also swung important cities including Valencia and Seville from the Sociali...Syrian state media: Suspected Israeli airstrikes target Damascus

DAMASCUS (AP) — Airstrikes attributed to Israel targeted Syria’s capital city late Sunday, the first such strikes in a month, Syrian state media reported.Syrian air defenses responded to the strikes in the vicinity of Damascus and shot down some of them, state news agency SANA reported. The attack caused only “material damage,” it said. The last suspected Israeli airstrike on Syria was on April 29, targeting the province of Homs. SANA, citing military officials, said at the time that three civilians were wounded in the strike and that a civilian fuel station caught fire and a number of fuel tankers and trucks were burned. There was no immediate statement from Israeli authorities regarding Sunday’s strikes on Damascus.Israel, which has vowed to stop Iranian entrenchment next door, has carried out hundreds of strikes on targets in government-controlled parts of neighboring Syria in recent years, but rarely acknowledges them. However, Israel’s defense minister, Yoav Gallant, s...Latest news
