Hurricane Otis batters Acapulco, rips across southern Pacific coast before becoming tropical storm

ACAPULCO, Mexico (AP) — Hurricane Otis ripped across Mexico’s southern Pacific coast as a powerful Category 5 storm early Wednesday, tearing through buildings in the resort city of Acapulco, sending sheets of earth down steep mountainsides and leaving large swaths of the southwestern state of Guerrero without power or cellphone service. While little is known about possible deaths or the full extent of the damage — the main highway into Acapulco was impassable — experts are calling Otis the strongest storm in history to make landfall along the Eastern Pacific Coast.By midmorning, Otis had weakened to a tropical storm, yet many on the coast were left reeling.Flor Campos had been trudging through mud for more than an hour along a highway outside Acapulco before she peeled off her shoes, worried she'd lose them in the muck. The domestic worker from a small town in Guerrero was among dozens of families, women and children who clambered over tree trunks and other debris left by landslides i...

Interpol Still Arresting Live

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 18:17:10 GMT

Interpol’s dark, melodic sound has remained solid through line-up and label changes that led to tangent explorations over the years. Lyrically they remain one of the most expressive and poetic bands still making music. On last year’s The Other Side of Make-Believe, their seventh album, singer Paul Banks emotes and sounds as enigmatic as ever, making it a record both old and new fans can appreciate. The gloomier aspects of the music made the New York band sort of neo-goth faves when they started out, but they’ve always been more varied than they got credit for and the mature place they’re at now proves it. Live at the Greek, their lush atmospherics and urgent hooks are sure to be as arresting as ever on the new stuff, and hopefully the classics still in regular listening rotation for many of us from Antics and Turn On the Bright Lights.Interpol at the Greek: The event takes place at 7:30 p.m. Sunday-Monday, October 29-30. lagreektheatre.com/events/detail/interpol-1    &...

Alex Riggins | The San Diego Union-TribuneIn the years after the 2016 arrest of Sinaloa cartel kingpin Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, a bloody power struggle between Guzmán’s sons and his longtime business partner has unleashed brutal violence across Mexico.Authorities say one of the factions fighting against Guzmán’s sons — collectively known as Los Chapitos — was a prolific drug-trafficking cell with major ties to San Diego. And one of their main suppliers of the guns and other weapons they used to fight Los Chapitos was Alfredo Lomas Navarrete, a Culiacán cellphone store owner who helped coordinate the southbound flow of weaponry, some of it purchased in San Diego, through border crossings in San Diego and Arizona.Last week, a federal judge in San Diego sentenced Lomas to 15 years in federal prison. According to prosecutors, he supplied “hundreds of weapons and tens of thousands of rounds of ammunition” to the cartel cell, known as the Valenzuela D...
